The Choice that Lies Ahead
Do you remember the time the Democratic party booed God?
If you remember that far back, the 2012 Democratic party moved to remove the phrase “God—given” from their platform, with regards to the origin of the rights of the people. There was tremendous backlash for making that adjustment, so much so that it came up for a vote again, in the video accompanying this article. A verbal vote was taken at the convention shown, and there was not an obvious 2/3 vote on the motion, nevertheless, the Chairman stated there was, and “God-given” was added back to the platform.
Shephard Smith of Fox News, reporting on this, advised that President Barack Obama personally involved himself in overturning the matter. However, it was clear in the moment, the gathering of Democrats loudly booed the addition of the phrase back to the platform. One may speculate on why President Obama would have wanted a hand in this, but many years of his governance should indicate that, at the very least, he understood this was not a good look for his party. Whether one wants to argue about whether he truly has a belief in God or not is irrelevant. It is clear, however, that the issue at hand, became the optics of removing God.
Fast-forward the scene to today. The Democratic party is openly rejecting the concepts of religion, God, and traditional morality. In California, a Church Pastor is being held in contempt for holding a Church service, while rioting and looting continue to plague parts of the country, and people are held back from returning to work or opening their business.
The Democratic party is again engaging in optics with the official nomination of Former Vice President Joe Biden and his running mate, Senator Kamala Harris. Biden is being portrayed as a return to civility, while Harris is touted as an African-American first, one who will run on law and order. Both portrayals betray the current cultural and political environment. Meanwhile, our opposing force is incumbent, President Donald Trump. President Trump is also a result of the current state of affairs and a reflection of our current culture and politics. He often speaks in such a way that is demeaning or exaggeratory of events, and is often the very definition of petty. Neither is a particularly wonderful choice.
However, the issue that is at hand is that of the two choices being presented to us (we really need a viable third and fourth-party), one party openly and brazenly reject God, though they speak with class, dignity, and use images and illustrations of peace and unity. While the other side, though they often seem off-put by social matters and woefully negligent acknowledging the residual effects of a time in American history that did in fact suppress people of color, currently seek to defend law, liberty, and religion, while also being the party to do more for people of color than at any other point in history. Christian, our choices are not always wonderful, but if you love protecting your family, working hard, and desire an opportunity to change some of America’s shortcomings, then choose accordingly, even if the outer veneer isn’t as pristine as you’d like.
Remember, the Pharisees were called white-washed tombs, full of dead men’s bones (Matt 23:27-28). America may be all about the outward appearance, but as Christians, we are taught to look deeper than the outside. We need to investigate and discern more than what meets the eye.
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.
28 “So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
